Haridwar: With heavy inflow Kanwariyas There has been a dramatic increase in accidents in the temple town, including at Dak Kanwars (pilgrims arriving on vehicles instead of on foot) in Haridwar in the last few days of the yatra. 10 Kanwariyas from Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh died in separate accidents in Haridwar and Roorkee over the weekend.
The first incident took place at Bairagi camp in Haridwar on Saturday night, when a truck carrying kanwariyas crushed two other pilgrims from Haryana, who were sleeping on the ground. SSI Kankhal Abhinav Sharma told TOI that the victims have been identified as Yogesh (21) and Deepanshu (22), residents of Sonepat in Haryana.
The second incident happened again on Saturday night near Prem Nagar Ashram bridge, in which three Kanwariyas of UP were killed in a collision between two bikes. “Only one of the victims can be identified as Vinay (25), a resident of Kaushambi in UP. We are working on identifying the other one,” the SSI said.
Two Kanwariyas of UP also died in a bike collision in Bahadarabad area on Saturday. “The incident happened near the bridge over Ratmau river. Chandra Pal (35) and Shivam (18), residents of Budaun district, died in the accident. Chandra Pal died on the spot, while Shivam died during treatment at the hospital,” said SHO Bahadarabad Nitesh Sharma.
In Roorkee near Haridwar, three pilgrims died in the last 24 hours, two of them from Delhi. A couple from Delhi’s Nangloi, returning from Haridwar carrying Gangajal, was hit by a vehicle on Sunday morning. The wife, identified as 45-year-old Sanju, died. Husband’s condition remains critical.
Meanwhile, 30-year-old Karan, a resident of Kanwadia in Brahmapuri, Delhi, died in an accident on the Narsan border. In another accident in Roorkee on Sunday morning, a Kanwariya met with an accident and died during treatment at the Civil Hospital in Roorkee.
Apart from this, about 25 Kanwariyas have received injuries in different accidents.
In Rishikesh, two groups of Kanwariyas clashed on the highway on Sunday. The pilgrims started thrashing each other with sticks, and the police had to intervene and disperse them. In Bahadarabad, a brawl broke out between the kanwariyas and the police after a group of dak kanwariyas accused police personnel of damaging their laptops. Kanwariyas created ruckus by blocking the road.
