10-year-old babysits sister during school, BJP leader offers to fund her education

After a picture of a Manipur girl, Meiningsinliu Pamei, nursing her younger sister during school went viral, Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan lauded her dedication. Pamei’s picture went viral after it was posted online by former Manipur minister and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Thongam Biswajit Singh.

Sharing the photo on Twitter, Singh revealed that the 10-year-old used to attend classes while raising her sister as there was no one to look after the child after her parents worked on the fields. Singh later traces the girl and promises that he will personally take care of the girl’s education till she completes her graduation.

Praising Pamei’s dedication to education, Pradhan re-shared the picture on his Twitter timeline on Monday, calling it a representation of the ‘aspirations’ of children, especially girls. “This powerful image represents the aspirations of our children, especially girls. For his dedication to education and his determination to build a better life for himself, the young man is deeply impressed by Miningsinliu Palmei. My blessings to him,” tweeted Pradhan.

Meanwhile, as schools reopened completely for offline classes in many parts of the country, Pradhan termed it as a sign of normalcy in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. The schools had to be closed in March 2020 following the outbreak of COVID-19 in the country and the subsequent lockdown. The classes were being offered to the students in online or hybrid mode.

Students were being allowed to attend classes only with the consent of their parents. However, from now on, schools in most parts of the country will conduct completely offline classes.

Addressing students ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s talk at the fifth edition of Pariksha Pe Charcha, Pradhan said that as we move towards normalcy, the school bells have started ringing again. He advised the students to watch the movie Chalo Jeetein Hum to take inspiration from the student days of PM Modi. Pradhan said that along with studying for the examination, students should also focus on increasing their self-confidence.
