Of the 24 families of Taliye village in Raigad district, which were affected by the landslide, 12 have got ‘container homes’ as temporary accommodation. This was followed by several attempts by former collector Nidhi Choudhary and present collector Mahendra Kalyankar to provide such houses through Corporate Social Responsibility activity.
Each container has a kitchen, table and toilet. The district administration provided water connections, and landlords Yogiraj Choudhary, Sundrabai Mane, Lakmabai Mane and Krishnabai Pandey provided land free of charge for planting containers.
“Another 12 containers will be procured and installed soon. This is a temporary arrangement. Our efforts to build permanent homes are on,” Mr. Kalyankar said.
For the rehabilitation of the affected villagers, about 17 hectares are being procured by the administration on floor basis. “Once the land becomes available, the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority will construct around 270 houses,” Mr. Kalyankar said.
On July 22, 84 people were killed in a landslide in Taliya of Mahad tehsil following heavy rains. While 53 bodies were found on the spot, 31 missing people were later declared brought dead.
