12 kg gold worth Rs 6.5 cr seized from 18 passengers at Tamil Nadu airport

Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu:

Officials of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) have seized 12 kg of foreign origin gold worth Rs 6.5 crore from 18 passengers who arrived at the airport from Sharjah.

The DRI said in a release on Tuesday that based on specific intelligence, the officials on Monday intercepted passengers carrying gold from Sharjah by an Air Arabia flight concealed in their persons and belongings.

The gold was recovered from his pant pockets, innerwear, luggage and was concealed in the rectum.

In all, the total quantity of foreign origin gold seized was 12 kgs, which is worth about Rs 6.5 crore.

Four passengers — Suresh Kumar of Chennai, Shankar of Cuddalore, Ramaprabhu of Paramakudi and Kumaravel of Salem — were arrested, the release said.
