A 15-year-old boy from Tiruvannamalai Tamil Nadu, Aravind has developed an app – ‘Golden Crop’ – to provide guidance to farmers on many aspects related to growing crops including areas like right crop selection and helping them. Understand the type of soil. It allows the farmers to test the soil and directly connects the user to the local soil testing laboratories thereby helping the farmers to make the right crop selection.
The app recommends crops that can provide better yield for the selected month to the user through understanding the location and the type of soil in the field as well as identification of local climatic conditions. In addition, it provides specific details including days required to harvest, market value of the crop, etc., to help the user understand the actual yield value.
Using the ‘Your Crop’ feature in the app, farmers can track their crops and get notified of the next important event to come. Farmers can also check the health of their crop by comparing it with the image of a healthy crop.
The app, while functional at present, is being further updated by Arvind. It also has the option of direct feedback from farmers which is helping them to improve the app further. They hope to soon make the app available for farmers in local regional languages as well.
Arvind says he has often seen farmers in his largely agricultural town worry about low crop yields, which are often the result of wrong crop selection or using the wrong variety of seeds. This inspired him to create the app.
Speaking about the app, Arvind, a WhiteHat junior student, said, “Growing up watching farmers around me, I often heard them talk about the issues they faced. ‘Golden Crop’ is a small effort to assist them in the decision making process so that they can earn better yield and lead a better life. I will keep working on this app adding more features. I hope the farmers of the area where I live, for whom I am making this app, will find it useful.”
Apart from technical challenges, Arvind faced hurdles in research work. In the midst of the pandemic, it was very difficult for them to conduct field research and reach out to people to get information. He took guidance from his teachers, his parents and others around him to find out the relevant information for the app. Arvind believes that technology can be used to solve a lot of real life problems and apart from farmer problems, he also wants to solve other major existing problems in future.
Arvind’s father, Saravan Kumar, said, “We are very proud of Arvind’s effort to help the farming community. It is fascinating to see how beautifully he has married technology with his understanding of the problems faced by farmers. I hope this will inspire other children and young people in their community to come up with solutions to the problems they see around them.”
