Hockey fever is all set to kick in the country for the top honors of the 16 teams participating in the FIH Odisha Hockey Junior World Cup Bhubaneswar 2021, starting November 24.
All four teams in their respective pools will aim to finish in the top half of their pool, as the top two teams from each pool will qualify for the quarter-finals.
European giants Belgium will face Malaysia, Chile and South Africa in Pool A.
defending champion India They are placed in Group B along with Canada, France and Poland, who arrived here last week to fight for the title.
India, led by skipper Vivek Sagar Prasad, will look to retain the coveted trophy as they take center stage at their home turf.
Vivek, who was a part of India’s historic bronze medal-winning performance at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, said, “Our team became champions in 2016 and now our team aims to continue the same performance.”
“While we did not have overseas competition, the team played a few practice matches against the senior team in Bhubaneswar which were quite valuable. We have got used to the stadium since we reached Bhubaneswar. The Kalinga Hockey Stadium is truly iconic. It is good that we are training here before we start,” India head coach Graham Reid added on the team’s preparations.
India will start its campaign against France on 24 November.
The Netherlands, Spain, Korea and the United States will face each other in Pool C. Germany, Pakistan, Egypt and Argentina will face each other in Pool D.
Belgium’s first match is against South Africa on 24 November.
