CHENNAI: Election Commissioner of India Anoop Chandra Pandey said on Saturday that youth can pre-register for voter ID card at the age of 17 and voter ID will be delivered to them. 18th birthday,
addressing to Chennai Corporation Pandey, a school student in the Ripon building, said the 17-year-old voters can download the helpline app and register themselves in advance.
“We will send you a voter ID card for your 18th birthday in a beautiful package,” he said.
He was speaking after presenting prizes to students for awareness programs on voting under Sweep (Systematic Voter Education and Electoral Participation) programme.
The commissioner said that youth and women play a vital role for the survival of democracy. “I am sure that their participation will increase the practice and publicity and awareness of not only democracy but also sweep activities,” he said.
Pandey said that India has become the most mature democracy in the world. “No voter is to be left behind. We have to ensure that all voters are included in our electoral roll. Today, I am happy to see that 50% of our voters are women. There are so many enthusiastic girls in this hall. We are fighting for democracy. That is the real essence of democracy.”
“You all have successfully contributed to the election process through your songs and dance performances,” Pandey said.
