Ottawa:

Two people were killed and nine other pedestrians were injured in a truck accident in Canada on Monday, police said.

Quebec police spokeswoman Helen St. Pierre told AFP that a 38-year-old man had been arrested and that investigators were looking into whether he had intentionally run over people in the town of Amqui, north of Quebec City.

“Everything indicates that this is an isolated incident,” she said. “There is no longer a threat in the area and only one suspect.”

The incident took place in Amqui town after 3 pm. The condition of two of the injured remains critical.

Witnesses told local media that a truck hit several people on the sidewalk, then continued for 400 to 500 meters along the side of the road, hitting people.

Both the deceased are 60 and 70 years old respectively. Police said that three children were also among the injured.
