New Delhi: India’s first two cases of COVID-19 infection by the Omicron variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus have been detected in Karnataka, the Union Health Ministry said on Thursday.
One of the infected people is a 66-year-old man and the other is 46, Joint Secretary in the ministry Lav Agarwal told reporters.
Senior government officials said that the primary and secondary contacts of the two cases have also been traced and appealed to the people to opt for timely vaccination and not to panic.
There were several cases of travelers from abroad entering India and testing positive, including a man from South Africa, but no genome analysis had detected the presence of an oomicron variant – believed to be SARS – until Thursday’s announcement. -CoV is the most mutated version. -2 so far – in India.
With 9,765 new coronavirus infections reported in a day, the total number of Covid cases in India rose to 3,46,06,541, while active cases rose to 99,763, according to ministry data updated on Thursday.
