2 police personnel held for helping gang to obtain call locations illegally

The Nungambakkam Police have arrested two police personnel for allegedly facilitating a gang of men, including AIADMK functionaries and a history-sheeter, to illegally obtain the call locations of a few individuals, and engage in other illegal acts.

The arrested are Senthil Kumar, constable of Armed Reserve Police who was working as personal security officer in Madurai to an MP, and Manithurai, a sub-inspector in Coimbatore.

According to the police, Selvabharathi, son of a retired police officer, was at a bar on Nungambakkam High Road late on May 22, when a group of five men picked up a quarrel with him over a song. Among them was Raja, the owner of a restaurant on ECR. They assaulted him and fled the spot.

Selvabharathi was taken to a hospital, where he received treatment.

Based on the manager’s complaint, the police registered a case against the accused on charges of attempt to murder. Following this, the gang allegedly went to the police station, and objected to the action taken against them.

After further investigation, on May 29, the police arrested five suspects — T. Prasad, 33 of Mylapore, who is an AIADMK functionary; R. Ganesh Kumar, 42, of Virugambakkam, and G. Dhanasekar, 29, of Chinna Porur in Vadapalani; D. Ajayrogan, 36, of Panaiyur; and Nagendra Sethupathi alias Tsunami Sethupathi, 33, a history-sheeter from Paramakudi of Ramanathapuram in Theni.

Their mobile phones were also seized.

Eleven days later, the police arrested two more associates of Prasad – Raja and Santhosh – in Pune.

The investigation revealed that Santhosh used his connections to get the call data records and mobile tower locations of a few individuals illegally though Manithurai and Senthilkumar.

The police arrested the two police officers, who also abetted the job racketing by other suspects, said police sources.
