Here’s a look at the terrorist attacks in Paris in January 2015. Charlie Hebdo magazine began publication in 1970 with the goal of satirizing religion, politics, and other topics. Most of the staff came from Hara-Kiri Publishing, which was banned after mocking the death of former President Charles de Gaulle.
Charlie in the title refers to Charlie Brown from the Peanuts cartoon. Hebdo is an abbreviation of Hebdomadier in French, which means weekly.
The magazine ceased publication in the 1980s due to lack of funds. It resumed publication in 1992.
In 2006, Charlie Hebdo reprinted controversial cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed, which had originally appeared in the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten. President of France Jacques Chiraco Criticized the decision and called it “highly provocative”.
In 2011, the magazine’s offices were destroyed by gasoline bombs after a caricature of the Prophet Muhammad was published.
