24 endangered animals die in Kaziranga National Park amid Assam floods

At least 24 endangered animals have been killed in the recent floods in Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve.

According to forest officials, 17 hog deer, two swamp deer, two rhinoceros, one wild buffalo, one python and one cap langur have died in the floods so far.

“The mother of the calf could not be traced. The calf, which is frail and debilitated, has been sent to the Center for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation (CWRC) for stabilization and rehabilitation,” an official of Kaziranga National Park said.

As the Brahmaputra river flowed above the danger mark, 70 per cent of the park was submerged in floods.

Every year, floods ravage the Kaziranga National Park and the animals have to take refuge in the higher reaches.

“With the overall recovery of floods, 30 per cent of Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve is still in flood waters as on Monday,” the official said.

Assam State Disaster Management Authority officials said the flood situation in Assam improved on Monday and around 1.19 lakh people were affected in 14 of the state’s 34 districts.

According to officials, seven people have died in the flood-affected districts so far.
