2400 policemen to provide security on counting day in Coimbatore

The Coimbatore City Police has deployed 2,400 policemen to provide security for the counting of votes here on Tuesday.

A senior police officer said that 100 commandos of Tamil Nadu Commando Force, Marutham in Chennai; Five companies of Tamil Nadu Special Police (TSP) and 500 personnel of Armed Reserve will be part of the security cover.

There is already a three-tier security cover in the main strong room and counting center of the Government College of Technology (GCT) on Thadgam Road.

Vehicles will not be allowed to enter within 100 meters of the main gate of the GCT.

Candidates, agents and media persons coming to the counting center will have to park their vehicles in the parking yard located on the Forest College campus.

Police personnel will be deployed in party offices and sensitive areas on the day of counting.

The official said that the police will not allow crowds for celebration or agitation in public places as it is in violation of the COVID-19 safety norms.

Candidates and agents are not allowed to carry electronic gadgets to the counting centre, where they will be allowed only after screening at the entrance. Only those carrying identity cards issued by the District Election Officer (District Collector) and the Returning Officer (Corporation Commissioner) of Coimbatore Corporation will be allowed to enter the counting centre. Slogans and other activities will not be allowed in the counting centre. Candidates and Agents coming from Cowley Brown Road, Gandhi Park Road and Maruthamalai Road should take Thadgam Road from Lawley Road Junction and park their vehicle in Forest College premises. Those coming from Anaikatty side have been asked to reach Lolly Road Junction from Mettupalayam Road and park their vehicles at Forest College campus. They can also walk from Azhagesan Road Junction to GCT and send their vehicles to Forest College via Azhagesan Road. General public traveling from Gandhipuram towards Thadgam has been asked to take Mettupalayam road and NSR road to bypass GCT junction. Those coming from Avinashilingam University will have to come from 4th street of Bharathi Park to reach NSR Road.
