2nd Test: Wian Mulder thrice as Bangladesh half-down on day 2 against South Africa

All-rounder Wynn Mulder took three consecutive wickets to lead South Africa to the top of the table at St George’s Park in Gakbarah on Saturday, the second day of the second Test against Bangladesh.

In reply to South Africa’s first innings score of 453, Bangladesh scored 139 for five.

Bangladesh lost a wicket in the very first over of their reply when Mahmudul Hasan Duane, who scored the first Test century, was dismissed for zero off Olivier.

Tamim Iqbal and Najmul Hossain put on a 79-run partnership for the second wicket at nearly four runs per over, before the medium-paced Mulder came into the attack.

He dismissed Tamim (47), Najmul (33) and captain Mominul Haque (6) in almost similar fashion.

Bowling around the wicket, he struck the ball into three left-handed batsmen and trapped them leg before the wicket.

At one point, he took three wickets for five runs in five overs. He ended the day with three wickets for 15 runs.

Olivier came back into the attack and bowled Liton Das for 11.

Mushfiqur Rahim survived two South Africa reviews for the leg before wicket, but he batted close until he scored an unbeaten 30.

Keshav Maharaj, who was man of the match for his bowling in South Africa’s 220-run victory in the first Test, hit a career-best 84 for South Africa.

He hammered his run of 95 balls with the help of nine fours and three sixes as South Africa added 175 for 278 for five overnight.

Bangladesh’s left-arm spinner Taijul Islam took six for 135 – the 10th time he has taken five or more wickets in a Test innings.

Maharaj completed his fourth Test fifty in 50 balls with the help of four fours and three sixes and scored his highest Test score.

He came on after Kyle Wren was bowled for 22 by Khalid Ahmed and went on the attack almost immediately, serious on fellow left-arm spinner Taijul, who was hit for a six off the first ball of the day.

Bangladesh’s best bowler on day one, Taijul, conceded 27 runs in six overs before changing ends and dismissed Mulder for 33.

In the end he bowled Maharaj when the batsman tried a big shot and got bowled and Simon Harmer was also stumped by wicketkeeper Liton Das for 29 runs.

South Africa’s first nine batsmen scored 20 or more but did not score a century.
