Manila: At least three people, including a former mayor of the Philippine city, were killed and another injured in an open attack by a gunman on a university campus in the capital region on Sunday.
The gunman armed with two pistols was arrested Shooting Near the gate of the Ateneo de manila University in suburban Quezon City. Police said the university was closed and graduation ceremonies at a law school were cancelled.
Officials said Supreme Court Chief Justice Alexander Gesmundo, who was supposed to be the speaker at the ceremony, was on his way to the university at the time of the attack and was advised to return.
Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte condemned the attack. “An incident like this has no place in our society and should be condemned to the highest level,” he said in a statement.
Officials said those killed in the attack were Rosita Furige, the former mayor of the city of Lamitan in the south. Basilan Province, its allies and a university guard.
A police report said Furige’s daughter, who attended the graduation ceremony, was injured and taken to hospital.
Investigators were trying to ascertain the motive for the attack.
The shooting took place despite heavy security and a gun ban imposed by police and other government forces in Quezon City, where newly-elected President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is to deliver his first state of the nation address on Monday ahead of a joint session of Congress in the House. of representatives.
