5G is coming to India in 2022: These 13 cities will get it first

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) announced that 5G internet services will actually be launched in India in 2022. According to a press statement, 13 cities across the country will initially get 5G. These 13 cities are Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chandigarh, Chennai, Delhi, Gandhinagar, Gurugram, Hyderabad, Jamnagar, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai and Pune.

However, the government has not confirmed which telecom operator will be the first to commercially launch 5G services. All three major telecom operators like Jio, Airtel and Vi (Vodafone Idea) have already set up test sites in these cities.

DoT Eight has partnered with eight agencies for an indigenous 5G (/topic/5g) test bed project that began in 2018 and is set to be completed by December 31, 2021. These agencies are Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur, Indian Institute of Science (IISC) Bangalore, Society for Applied Microwave Electronics Engineering and Research (SAMEER) and Center of Excellence in Wireless Technology (CEWiT).

“At a cost of Rs 224 crore, the project is likely to be completed by December 31, 2021, with 5G (/subject/5G) user equipment (UE) and end-to-end network equipment by 5G (/subject) paves the way for testing. /5g) stakeholders developing 5G (/subject/5g) products/services/use cases in the country including indigenous start-ups, SMEs, academia and industry,” the DoT said.
