At least six people drowned while idols of Lord Ganesh were immersed in Haryana’s Mahendragarh and Sonipat districts. Haryana CM Manohar Lal Khattar has expressed grief over the incident.

Six people died due to drowning while idols of Lord Ganesh were immersed in Haryana’s Mahendragarh and Sonipat districts on Friday evening.
He said that four youths drowned in canal in Mahendragarh while two drowned in Yamuna river in Sonipat. Regarding the Mahendragarh incident, Civil Surgeon Dr Ashok Kumar told reporters that four people were brought to the hospital in a dead state.
In Mahendragarh, nine youths were washed away when a group carrying a seven-foot idol for immersion was washed away in a stream of water in the canal.
The district administration started the rescue operation with the help of NDRF. While four died, others were rescued and admitted to the hospital.
Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar tweeted, “The news of untimely death of many people due to drowning during Ganpati immersion in Mahendragarh and Sonipat districts is heartbreaking.

“We all stand with the families of the deceased in this difficult time. NDRF team has saved many people from drowning. I pray for their speedy recovery,” Khattar tweeted in Hindi.

Several Ganesh idols were immersed in rivers, canals and other water bodies on Friday after the conclusion of the 10-day Ganesh festival.
