6 including Mizoram CM’s brother sentenced to jail in corruption case

A special court in Aizawl on Wednesday sentenced six people, including the younger brother of Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga, to one year in jail in a corruption case.

These six people were convicted by Special Court (Prevention of Corruption Act) Judge HTC Lalrinchan for obtaining government compensation through bogus claims by making forged land passes and authorization letters.

C Vanlalchuana, Saithanga, C Rokhumi, Lalduhama and PC Lalthajovi, all residents of Aizawl, and K Lalravana of Champhai town received compensation amounting to over Rs 2 crore for land submerged due to the construction of a 60 MW hydroelectric project at Tuirial. He was convicted under IPC sections 420 (cheating), 467 (forgery of valuable security), 468 (forgery for the purpose of cheating), 471 (using a forgery as genuine), and 120B (criminal conspiracy) Was.

The court, however, acquitted two other accused – H Liangela, the then assistant deputy commissioner (ADC) of Aizawl district and current director of the state Urban Development and Poverty Alleviation (UD&PA) and Lalrinsanga, former village council president of Saipum. The CBI, which was probing the case, failed to prove his guilt beyond reasonable doubt.

The convicts were also asked to pay Rs 20 lakh each as fine, failing which they would have to undergo additional imprisonment of 10 years each.
