“The situation is worrying. All the dead had completed their sentence. It is the responsibility of Pakistan to ensure the safety of Indian prisoners in that country.”
“We would like to reiterate that Pakistan is bound to ensure the safety of all Indians in its custody and we once again request the Government of Pakistan to immediately release and bring back all Indians,” he said.
“This is a persistent problem. … The number of fishermen deaths has increased in recent times… In the last 9 months, 6 Indian prisoners (5 of whom were fishermen) have died in Pakistani custody,” Bagchi said.
India had earlier asked Pakistan to expedite the release and repatriation of 536 Indian fishermen and three Indian civilian prisoners, who have completed their sentences and whose nationality has been confirmed and conveyed to Pakistan. In addition, Pakistan was asked to provide immediate consular access to the remaining 105 fishermen and 20 civilian prisoners who are in Pakistani custody and believed to be Indians.
