Tamil Nadu on Monday reported 605 new cases of COVID-19, taking the total to 27,44,642. At present 6,562 people are undergoing treatment.
The fresh infections included two travelers each from Tanzania and the United Arab Emirates and one from Bangladesh. A person who arrived by road from West Bengal also tested positive.
Out of 16,762 passengers from at-risk countries tested on arrival, 86 were found infected and 89 persons from non-at-risk countries tested positive.
172 cases in Chennai
In Chennai, 172 persons tested positive and 1,442 patients are undergoing treatment. 88 new cases were reported in Coimbatore and 50 in Chengalpattu. In all other districts, the number of fresh cases was less than 50. No fresh infections were reported in Ariyalur, Mayiladuthurai, Pudukottai, Tenkasi and Theni districts. In Arilyoor and Theni, less than 10 persons each are undergoing treatment. With 663 persons discharged, the number of recovered persons rose to 27,01,336.
The daily bulletin of the Directorate of Public Health also recorded nine deaths. Five patients died in private hospitals and four in government hospitals. They all had co-morbidities. The toll rose to 36,744.
A 90-year-old woman from Chennai with severe hypertension tested positive on December 21, a day after she was admitted to a private hospital after complaining of fever, cough for two days and difficulty in breathing for six days. He died of COVID-19 pneumonia on 25 December.
1,15,096 individuals were vaccinated with Covishield and Covaxin in 4,654 sessions. 184 of them were health workers; 81 frontline workers; 67,898 persons aged 18-44; 30,725 persons aged 45-59; and 16,208 senior citizens. So far 8,04,94,170 people have been vaccinated.
