7 deaths in 24 hours even as daily COVID-19 counts in Maharashtra drop; 20% increase in cases in Mumbai | Thane News – Times of India

MUMBAI: Seven people succumbed to COVID-related complications in the state in a span of 24 hours, according to the state’s COVID-19 update on Wednesday.
A senior doctor in that state government said the daily state tally, however, was less than 4,000 (the average single-day caseload last week) on Wednesday, indicating a decline in the current surge.
In Mumbai, the daily tally rose 20% (1,645) compared to Tuesday’s number of 1,290. However, hospitalizations came down to 60 as compared to over 100 admissions a few days ago. The city’s daily test positivity rate also dropped to 10% after rising to 20% about 10 days ago.
Rising deaths seem to be the focus right now. Since Sunday, the state has registered an increase in Covid-related deaths with 22 deaths in four days. Of these, 15 deaths have occurred in Mumbai.
A civic official said that most of the deaths occurred in people with comorbidities and those without vaccination. The victims on Wednesday included a 37-year-old man with liver failure, an 84-year-old man with kidney disease and a 64-year-old woman with diabetes and hypertension.
Deaths were also reported in Mumbai’s neighboring cities such as Thane (two) and Vasai-Virar region (one), and Kolhapur (one).
The recent spike in cases was largely seen in Mumbai and its satellite cities. Experts said that the deaths are higher in June as compared to April and May due to the higher number of cases; Deaths occur a week or two after cases peak.
Out of Wednesday’s 3,696 cases, 2,603 ​​cases were from Mumbai region while Pune stood second with 875 cases. Most other regions had less than 150 cases each.
