72-year-old Bangkok man cremates wife after living with coffin for nearly 21 years

A 72-year-old man in Thailand recently cremated his wife after living with her dead body for more than two decades. according to this IndependentCharan Janavachkal finally bid farewell to his wife on April 30, 21 years after her death.

A disturbing video shared on Facebook shows Mr Janwachkal assisting Bangkok Foundation employees to move his wife’s coffin outside their home in Bangkok’s Bang Khen district. He placed his wife’s body next to him in a small room where he slept and talked to her saying that she was still alive. Independent,

“You are just leaving for a brief business and you will be back home again. It will not be long, I promise,” Mr Janavachkal can be heard saying, referring to his wife in the video.

According to reports, charity workers retrieved the rotting coffin from a dirty place surrounded by plastic bags and other garbage. No legal action has been taken against the man as he had registered his wife’s death with the authorities. It may be mentioned that Mr. Janavachkal’s companion had died of congenital disease in 2001.

A Bangkok Foundation executive, who had previously visited a senior citizen to help him recover from a motorcycle accident, was not aware of the incident as he had not seen the coffin in his home. However, later, Mr Janavachkal himself reached out to the foundation to ask for help with the cremation rituals as he feared that his deceased wife would not receive a proper ceremony in the event of her death.

Independent Told that Shri Janvachkal is well educated and has earned many degrees. But there was no electricity in his house and it was said that his condition was bad. The 72-year-old revealed that he lived with his wife and two sons, however, their sons decided to move out of the house as they were not comfortable with their father’s decision to keep the corpse on the property.

Mr. Janavachkal graduated from the Faculty of Pharmacy at Chulalongkorn University. He has served as a medic in the Royal Thai Army and his wife has also served in the Ministry of Public Health.
