8-month-old baby allegedly dies after explosion next to mobile phone battery: Full story

An eight-month-old infant died in Uttar Pradesh’s Bareilly after the battery of a phone allegedly kept with him exploded. According to a report in ET, the keypad phone was charging and the battery was already swollen when it exploded next to the child.

The keypad phone I bought just six months ago already had a swollen battery plugged into the Switch, which was connected to a solar panel. The smartphone exploded next to the child, causing severe burns leading to the infant’s death. According to the Uttar Pradesh Police, it is a case of negligence of the parents and no case has been registered.

The child’s father Sunil Kumar Kashyap is a 30-year-old laborer and the family was living in an under-construction house without electricity connection. They were using solar plates and batteries to light and charge their devices. As per reports, Kashyap was at work while his wife, a housewife, was at home with their daughters. He allegedly kept the phone on the bed where the child was sleeping. In her statement, Kusum said that she was talking to a neighbor when the incident happened and went back after hearing her daughter screaming for help.

“I was talking to a neighbor when I heard my daughter Nandini shouting for help. The fire broke out in the bunk due to the explosion of the mobile. Neha was badly burnt. I never thought that a mobile phone could be fatal for our daughter, otherwise I wouldn’t have kept it there.

Kashyap’s brother Ajay Kumar said the phone was getting a charger with a USB cable but the adapter was not connected, so it exploded. “My brother did not have much money for Neha’s treatment in a private hospital, otherwise her life could have been saved,” Kumar said.
