Around 8,500 chickens died in a fire at a poultry farm near Annoor in Coimbatore district late on Saturday night.
Fire and Rescue Services said the fire was reported at a poultry farm, which was operating on C. Ganeshkumar’s land in Ambothi village near Annoor.
The fire started around 7.30 pm on Saturday and spread rapidly due to the wind and sawdust lying on the floor of the shed.
A fire unit from Annoor fire station, led by Balachandran of the station office, reached the spot and brought the fire under control by 10.45 pm.
Besides about 8,500 chickens, various equipment and poultry feed were also burnt in the fire. The fire official said the birds were about three weeks old.
Annoor police have registered a case.
