New Delhi:
Nine BJP-ruled states – Assam, Tripura, Manipur, Karnataka, Goa, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand – have announced additional cuts in petrol and diesel prices. Diesel was hiked by Rs 5 and Rs 10, respectively, on the eve of Diwali, aimed at providing relief to people grappling with the impact of rising fuel prices. The price cut will be effective from Thursday – November 4.
Assam, Tripura, Manipur, Karnataka and Goa have reduced the prices of both the fuels by Rs 7 per liter apart from the Centre’s relief. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Wednesday said that VAT on petrol will be reduced by Rs 2 per liter in the state. Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur said that the state will soon issue a notification to reduce the Value Added Tax (VAT) on petrol and diesel.
Biplab Deb on Wednesday tweeted, “Following the decision of the Central Government to reduce the excise duty on Petrol and Diesel under the leadership of Hon’ble PM Shri @narendramodi ji. Tripura Govt. has also reduced the cost of Petrol and Diesel by Rs.7 from tomorrow.” have decided to do.”
States have long been urging the Center to slash value-added tax on both petrol and diesel – whose prices have been trending upward in the past few months. Petrol prices had touched Rs 120 a liter in some states, while diesel has crossed the Rs 100 mark in three metros.
The opposition is constantly attacking the Center over the rising fuel prices. On November 1, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi wrote in a tweet about the rates of petrol and diesel that one should be wary of “pickpockets” along with the hashtags “tax extortion”.
On Wednesday, the price of petrol in Delhi was Rs 110.04 per liter while diesel was being sold for Rs 98.42. Petrol in Mumbai was Rs 115.85 per liter while diesel was Rs 106.62 per litre.
In recent months, there has been a global jump in crude oil prices. As a result, domestic prices of petrol and diesel have skyrocketed in recent weeks. “Today’s decision is expected to give further impetus to the overall economic cycle,” the Center said in a statement.
