Fourteen more fishermen in possession of Sri Lankan Navy

Nineteen mechanized trawlers were also seized by the Sri Lankan Navy.

Fourteen more fishermen from Tamil Nadu belonging to Pudukottai and Mayiladuthurai districts were allegedly detained by the Sri Lankan Navy for crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) on the evening of December 20.

While seven of them were from Mayiladuthurai, the rest were from Pudukottai. The fishermen went to sea from Jagadapattinam fishing port to catch fish on two mechanized trawlers.

According to sources, the Sri Lankan naval vessel detained all of them and seized two trawlers while they were fishing in the periphery of IMBL. He was later taken to the coast of the island nation for questioning.

With this, the number of fishermen arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy in the last three days has gone up to 69.

Meanwhile, Consulate General of India officials provided material and legal aid to 43 Indian fishermen detained at Mayiladdy fishing port (December 18) and 12 fishermen detained at Mannar (December 19). A tweet from the official handle of the Consul General of India said that the authorities sought the welfare of the fishermen and facilitated phone calls to their families in India.
