Telecom operators can keep call data, internet usage records for at least 2 years

Telecom Deptt (DoT) has increased the period for storing call data and internet usage records of customers from one year to two years due to security reasons.

The amendments to the license were issued on 21 December and extended to other forms of telecom permits on 22 December.

“The Licensee shall maintain all commercial records/call detail records/exchange detail records/IP detail records along with the records of communications exchanged over the network. Such records shall be stored for at least two years for verification by the licensor for security reasons shall be done. . .,” the DoT circular stated.

Telecom companies can then destroy the stored data if there is no instruction from DoT thereafter.

The circular said the amendment is necessary “in the public interest or in the interest of the security of the State or for the proper operation of the telegraph”.

The amendment mandates telcos to maintain Internet data records of customers including login and logout details of all customers for Internet access, e-mail, calls made from mobile applications such as Internet telephony services or Wi-Fi calling services. Is. years.

Earlier the rules made it mandatory to store call data and internet usage records for at least 1 year.
