London: Britain registered a record 129,471 new cases of Kovid-19 on Tuesday, a day after the Prime Minister boris johnson He said he would not introduce new restrictions this year to limit the spread of the virus.
Data for Scotland and Northern Ireland were not included in the data due to differences in reporting practices over the Christmas holidays.
The 12,378 cases reported for Wales included data that would have normally been reported in the previous day.
The previous record high of daily infections was 122,186 on December 24.
Johnson said on Monday he would not impose new restrictions in England. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have tightened their rules, as have other European countries facing a surge in omicron cases.
British ministers are waiting for more evidence about how the healthcare system can tackle the high infection rate, as early data last week suggested the Omicron version had a lower risk of hospitalisation.
The government said there have been 18 new deaths within 28 days of a positive Covid-19 test – far below the recent trend of over 100 per day. This figure has been reduced from earlier public holidays.
