Bajaj Auto has announced an investment of ₹300 crore ($40 million) and commenced work on a new manufacturing unit in Akurdi, the site of the original Chetak scooter factory. The new manufacturing unit will have a capacity of 500,000 electric vehicles per year, and the first vehicle is expected to be commissioned at the new facility by June 2022. The manufacturing facility is expected to generate incremental jobs for over 800 people, and will manufacture electric vehicles for both the domestic market as well as overseas markets.

Bajaj Auto is the largest exporter of two wheelers in India.

Speaking about the new unit, Rajiv Bajaj, Managing Director, Bajaj Auto Ltd. said, “In 2001, Bajaj 2.0 took off on the roaring Pulsar, in 2021 comes the Bajaj 3.0 on the lucrative Chetak. Going forward, Bajaj will be part of the portfolio. All our R&D drive train resources are now laser focused on creating EV solutions for the future, except for implementing a state-of-the-art ICE platform that is currently under development. The new EV manufacturing facility is located close to the state-of-the-art R&D center of Bajaj Auto.

According to a statement from Bajaj Auto, the new facility will have state-of-the-art robotic and automated manufacturing systems for everything including logistics and material handling, fabrication and painting, assembly and quality assurance. The company said these systems are designed for a flexible product mix keeping in mind the best labor ergonomics and maximum process efficiency. Bajaj Auto said in a statement that the Akurdi unit is spread over five lakh square feet and will employ around 800 employees.

The investment by Bajaj Auto will be complemented by multiple vendors, who will invest a further ₹250 crore ($33 million), the company announced. The new EV manufacturing unit is co-located with Bajaj Auto’s state-of-the-art R&D center to foster greater collaboration, leading to faster time to market. The company said it should transform Bajaj Auto’s Akurdi facility into a center for design, development and manufacturing of a full range of electric vehicles.
