Chief Minister MK Stalin on Thursday inaugurated the illumination of the iconic landmark Rockfort of Tiruchi. The project, undertaken as part of the heritage tourism development, includes lighting of the hill and a light-and-sound show at the Tepakulam Rockfort Thayumanaswamy Temple.
Tiruchi Corporation has installed around 180 LED lights to illuminate the 273 feet high Rockfort. Corporation officials said that LED lights were installed on the existing pillars around the hill.
The illumination was done on a design, build, operate and transfer (DBOT) basis under the Smart Cities Mission at an estimated cost of ₹ 11.3 crore for a period of five years. The operation and maintenance of the show for three years is included in the project estimate.
Senior civic officials said that with the lights of Rockfort, people from far and wide would also be able to enjoy the panoramic view of this historical place.
Meanwhile, the work of setting up a light and sound show at Tepakulam is yet to be completed. Adapted equipment, including an LED screen, was installed above the water level on the buoyant material. The work cost ₹8.8 crore and seeks to showcase the history of Tiruchi through engaging video and sound performances.
Pre-recorded videos about the historical importance of the Rockfort, the various rulers who ruled the land and other places of historical importance in Tiruchi will be showcased at certain times. Underground pipelines were also being laid with colorful lights and music for the fountain show.
