GM takes advantage of ADAS technology that Cruise has developed in some of its cars.
GM has said it will launch a personal autonomous car by the middle of the decade, taking advantage of technology developed by its subsidiary Cruise. GM made the announcement at the CES 2022 press conference. Its CEO Mary Barra did not share details about what car or what type of car it would be.
GM’s Cruise already has a self-driving robottaxi service in a testing phase in California, but it is classified as public transportation. Cruci is also working with GM for the launch of a purpose-built autonomous car called Origins for ride-sharing that is currently in a testing phase.
Cruise is perhaps the most important autonomous vehicle player after Waymo
GM takes advantage of ADAS technology that Cruise has developed in some of its cars. It’s called Super Cruise which is ADAS level 2, but now it has also announced Ultra Cruise which is level 2+. Even Tesla’s Autopilot is classified as a Level 2 ADAS, however, so it has marketed it as having full self-driving capability. GM certainly isn’t doing that and believes a commercially sold autonomous vehicle for personal use will launch around 2025.

GM closed deals with Qualcomm for its Snapdragon digital chassis platform at CES 2022, earlier this week, its Cruise subsidiary and its electric cars. It also unveiled an electric version of its iconic Silverado SUV.
