Captain Rani Rampal, goalkeeper Savita, Gurjeet Kaur, Deep Grace Ekka, Vandana Katariya, Lalremsiami and Monika are among women’s hockey legends in the core group of 36 national prospects announced by Hockey India on Friday. The core group of prospects was selected from a group of 60 players after selection tests conducted at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) centre, who were called on the basis of their performance in national level events.
While the 18-member Indian women’s team will travel to Muscat, Oman for the Women’s Hockey Asia Cup (January 21-28), the rest of the core group players will stay in the camp and continue training for the FIH Hockey Pro League. The matches to be held in Bhubaneswar, Odisha next month.
Apart from senior players, young players like Salima Tete, Sangeeta Kumari, Preeti Dubey and Rajwinder Kaur have also been included in the list.
Jeanneke Schopmann, head coach of the women’s team, said, “It is time for us to start afresh and plan for the future. We have grown with our experiences in Tokyo (Olympics) over the past year and we must continue to grow and develop in the years ahead before Paris 2024 (Olympics).
“The upcoming camp is important for us to recognize the players who are ready to showcase their skills at the biggest stages, and also to work on the areas where we need to improve,” the coach said.
