The Delhi government will reconsider the reopening of schools in the meeting to be held today. Delhi Education Minister and Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia is in favor of reopening the schools. A delegation of parents had recently met Sisodia and demanded reopening of schools keeping in mind the well being of the students.
The COVID cases and positivity rate are declining in Delhi. In such a situation, it is likely that the decision to reopen will be announced today. The AAP government has also recommended reopening of schools. “I agree to the demands of the parents. We closed the school as it is not safe for the kids but extreme caution is now harming our kids. “If we don’t open our schools now, a generation of kids will be left behind,” Sisodia said in a tweet.

A delegation of parents of children of Delhi, led by policy experts Dr Chandrakant Laharia and Yamini Iyer, submitted a memorandum to Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia. More than 1600 parents signed the memorandum demanding the reopening of schools.
The parents claimed that the school closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic in the last two years have not only made a huge difference in learning among children, but also affected their mental and emotional health.
Dr Chandrakant Laharia, a member of the parents’ delegation, said that according to organizations like AIIMS, ICMR, Indian Academy of Pediatrics, NITI Aayog, WHO and many others, the risk associated with COVID in children is very low.
Yamini Iyer, chair of the Center for Policy Research, said that many researchers have found that children are forgetting even basic math and basic language skills. To bridge the learning gap, it is necessary to reopen schools. Schools focus on the holistic development of the children, which is not possible through education at home and online.
After meeting the parents, Sisodia had said, “In the last two years, the lives of school children have been reduced to their rooms. Instead of going to school and spending time in playgrounds, now all their activities are done on mobile phones. The pandemic-induced school closures have not only affected their studies but their mental health as well.”
“During COVID, our priority was the safety of the children. But since various researches have now found that COVID is not so harmful for children, it is important to reopen schools, as now is the time for exams and related preparations.”
