Ghostly monkeys, lush bamboo among new species in Mekong – Times of India

Bangkok: With a Monkey ghostly white circles Its eyes are among the 224 new species listed. World Wildlife FundLatest updates on the greater Mekong area.
The conservation group’s report, released on Wednesday, highlights the need to protect the rich biodiversity and habitats in the region, which includes Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Myanmar.
Listed species were found in 2020 but reports from last year were delayed. monkey is called popa langur, because it lives on the steep hills of the extinct Mount Popa volcano in Myanmar. It was the only new mammal. There are also dozens of newly identified reptiles, frogs and newts, fish and 155 plant species, including the only known succulent bamboo species found in Laos.
The Mekong region is a biodiversity hotspot and is home to tigers, Asian elephants, the saola – an extremely rare animal also known as the Asian unicorn or spindlehorn – and thousands of other species.
Adding to this latest list, WWF said scientists have identified more than 3,000 new species in the region since 1997.
The scientists used measurements and samples from museum collections to compare and identify key differences with the characteristics of the newly discovered animals and plants, the report said.
Studying such differences could help determine the range of species and threats to their existence, said Thomas Ziegler, a curator at the Cologne Institute of Zoology, who presented the report.
New species are difficult to identify, however, and can sometimes only be determined using a variety of methods, such as frog calls and genetic data used to isolate the cardamom leaf small frog, which Cardamom is found high in the mountains in the wildlife refuge.
Some species are found in more than one country, including the bright orange twin slug snake, which consumes slugs.
The pope langur was identified on the basis of genetic matching of recently collected bones with specimens from Britain. Museum of Natural History Collected more than a century ago, the report said. The two main distinguishing features were wide white rings around its eyes and its front-pointing whiskers.
WWF, working with fauna And Flora InternationalCaptured pictures of monkeys using camera traps in 2018. The FFI reported the discovery late last year.
The monkey is a candidate listed as a critically endangered species on the Red List International Union for Conservation of NatureBecause only 200-250 are believed to survive in the wild, in a few places, the report said.
Underlining the urgency of such work, more than 38,000 of the 138,000 species the IUCN tracks are at risk of extinction.
A new type of begonia and berry-like fruit with scarlet flowers was also found in the uplands of Myanmar, where illegal mining and logging have become a serious threat in the country, between Political upheaval After a military takeover a year ago.
Despite human encroachment on tropical forests and other wooded areas, much of the Greater Mekong is still poorly explored and dozens of new species are found each year – a ray of hope as many species go extinct.
Not all new species are found in deep forests. One of the new plant species is the ginger plant called “stink bug“Its pungent smell like large beetles is what Thais use to make a dipping paste of chili peppers served with rice,” the report said.
It was found in a plant shop in northeastern Thailand.
