According to a report by 9to5Mac, the macOS Monterey 12.3 beta version has the framework and daemons that are required to support UWB technology. The report states that these are the exact same tools used for UWB support on iOS devices.
What is UWB technology and what are its advantages?
Ultra wideband is a wireless protocol that uses radio waves for communication. For beginners, Apple first introduced UWB with iPhone 11 two years ago. To make UWB work, Apple put the U1 chip in the iPhone. The technology has made its way to the Apple Watch, AirTag and HomePod Mini.
UWB is used to accurately track the location of devices that support UWB. It also helps with faster AirDrop, AirPlay transfers and in the countries it supports, users can get CarKey authentication without taking the iPhone out of their pocket. In addition, it helps to track the exact location of devices using Find My Network.
It will be interesting to see how Apple incorporates UWB into Mac computers. The new iPad models also lack Ultra Wideband technology. So we can’t say whether the next MacBook will have a U1 chip or what other plans Apple might have for UWB for computers. Also, keep in mind that this is a feature found in the beta version and may not be rolled out to the public version at all. This gives an indication that Macs One may also get UWB in some form or the other in future.
