All measures taken for local body elections: Election observer

The district administration has taken all necessary steps for the upcoming local body elections, election observer and principal secretary Har Sahai Meena said after holding a review meeting at Coimbatore collectorate here on Saturday.

A release issued at the end of the meeting said that voting will be held in one municipal corporation, seven municipalities and 33 nagar panchayats in the district. Coimbatore Corporation with 100 wards had 15.65 lakh voters, seven municipalities with 198 wards had 3.36 lakh voters and 33 nagar panchayats with 513 wards had 4.86 lakh voters.

A total of 23.88 lakh voters will exercise their franchise on February 19.

Coimbatore Corporation had one Returning Officer, 20 Assistant Returning Officers and 15 Flying Squads, seven Municipalities had as many Returning Officers, 21 Assistant Returning Officers and so many Flying Squads, and 33 Nagar Panchayats had so many Returning Officers, 66 Assistant Returning Officers. At the end of the window period for filing nominations, 1,130 candidates had filed nominations to contest elections in Coimbatore Corporation, 1,097 in 198 wards in seven municipalities and 2,346 for 513 wards in 33 nagar panchayats. Nomination was filed for

The corporation will have one counting center for 100 wards, seven counting centers in seven municipalities and nine centers in 33 nagar panchayats. In all the urban local bodies going to the polls, the district administration had identified 436 booths to be sensitive, where it would install CCTV cameras and take other necessary measures to monitor the polling.

The release said that Mr. Meena flagged off a hi-tech electronic vehicle of the Information and Public Relations Department to create awareness among voters in the urban local bodies going to vote.

Collector GS Sameeran, Municipal Commissioner of Police Pradeep Kumar, Corporation Commissioner Raja Gopal Sunkara, Superintendent of Police Selvanagarathinam and other senior officers participated in the meeting.
