Tripura Police gives ‘appearance notice’ to 5 TMC leaders

Tripura Police has served notices to five Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders, including party’s national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, who was earlier booked for allegedly creating a ruckus at a police station in West Tripura.

Besides Mr Banerjee, MP Dola Sen, former MP Kunal Ghosh, West Bengal Education Minister Bratya Basu and state leader Subal Bhowmik were also given ‘notice to appeal’. Case related to their visit to Khowai police station in Khowai district on August 8 to seek bail of arrested party leaders and workers, including three youth leaders from West Bengal arrested for violating COVID-19 restrictions .

Videos circulating on TV and social media showed TMC leaders in a heated argument with police officials to protest the arrest and demand the release of their party members. Police registered a case two days after the incident suo moto A case has been registered against five TMC leaders at Khowai police station for obstructing police officers in discharge of their official duty, abusing officers and other charges.

The TMC has confirmed that it has received the ‘Notice to Appear’ and has said that the concerned leaders will cooperate with the investigating officer. Mr. Banerjee will again lead a group of leaders to attend a rally here on September 22.

A group of TMC leaders led by West Bengal MP Dr. Shantanu Sen on Saturday met Additional Director General of Police (Crime) Puneet Rastogi seeking permission to hold the rally. The police have twice denied permission for the TMC’s rally citing a program of a different political party and a religious festival as reasons.

The party recently demanded a judicial inquiry by a sitting High Court judge into an incident of custodial death at Sonamura police station in Sepahijala district. It also sought compensation and job for the family of victim Jamal Hussain (31) who was booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.
