“I’m a big animal lover and this is something that has affected a lot of people.

“I was completely disappointed with what I saw and what I was told, but my job was to try and win for West Ham. Some people will be disappointed and I understand that.

‘I had to do my job’

Zouma had to taste the public reaction to his action as he was constantly slammed by Watford supporters, with even West Ham fans joining in on some of the joke.

Moyes discussed the incident with Zuma, but admitted he would let the club decide whether disciplinary action should be taken.

“I’ve already talked to him and we’ll move on as best we can. We understand that it’s not something that pleases everyone. It’s a really bad situation,” he said.

“I always felt that I had to try to separate them and let the club have their side and I would do my side which is the football side. I’m assuming you’re talking to one of the most disciplinary managers out there.”

An online petition calling for Zouma to be “prosecuted for animal cruelty” had attracted 25,000 signatures by the time the match began.
