Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday said the GST Council should not be politicized as it is a body in which every finance minister of every state sits and decides how the disbursement will happen.

Intervening during Question Hour in Rajya Sabha on the issue of GST compensation, the Finance Minister said: “I appeal through you, that we need not politicize it. It is an insult. To the GST Council.”

NCP MLA Vandana Chavan had said the situation was similar in some non-BJP states during her supplementary question on the issue of GST, citing insufficient release of funds to the state of Maharashtra during the ‘Question Hour’.

Responding to his question, the Finance Minister said: “The council is the body which decides how the disbursement happens… Maharashtra has been much higher than other states.”

BJP member YS Choudhary also asked a question on GST compensation to be paid to the states so far, on which Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Choudhary informed the House about the pending status in respect of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

Replying to a question on setting up of Siddha Medical Research Center in Kollimalai hills of Tamil Nadu, AYUSH Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said: Considering the availability of medicinal plants there, I will definitely visit the place and a decision will be taken after that. . She.”
