“I Want To Go To School”: Afghan Girl’s Speech On The Internet

Since the Taliban took over Afghanistan, women’s rights have been a matter of concern. Schools across Afghanistan, including the capital city of Kabul, remained closed for a month in light of the conflict in the country and the return of the Taliban to power. Recently, the Taliban government issued a statement asking officials to make arrangements for the reopening of “madrasas, private and public schools and other educational institutions in the country”. However, return to school was a privilege granted only to middle and high school boys in the county, with no mention of girls.

“All teachers and male students must attend school,” the statement said, According to a Reuters report.

In the light of the announcement, students, both boys and girls, have shared pictures and videos demanding that girl students also be allowed to resume studies. One such video has been shared by Afghan journalist Bilal Sarwari on Twitter.

In the clip, a young girl is seen giving a powerful speech about the need to educate girls and women in Afghanistan. He says that it is necessary for the development of the country and the generations to come.

In the video, the girl says, ‘This is our chance to do something for our county. Allah has given this opportunity and women also have equal rights…So, who is the Taliban who can take this opportunity and right from us?

The soulful speech continues with him saying, “The girls of today are the mothers of tomorrow. If they don’t have education how will they teach manners to their children? I am from the new generation. I am not born just to eat, sleep and stay at home.” I want to go to school. I want to do something for the development of my country.”

She continues, “Can you imagine how our country would develop without education? If I don’t get education; If no girl child gets education in Afghanistan, how will our next generation be cultured? If we don’t have education, we will have no value in this world.”

Sharing the tweet, Mr. Sarvari wrote, ‘I want to go to school.’ Powerful message from this eloquent Afghan girl.”

The fiery speech created a stir on social media and users praised the girl’s courage to speak. The video has garnered over 48,300 views and is being shared widely within a few hours of being uploaded.

“Very brave. Really impressed. Hope she is safe, as well as her family. I am sure, speaking up is a dangerous decision,” said one user.

Another user described the child as brave and said that the country has “lost everything, especially such talented girls.”
