NASA recently shared a picture on its Instagram handle, leaving netizens completely stunned. The space agency has released a new image of the crater of Mars. In the caption, NASA wrote, “You are looking at 0° longitude on Mars – the Greenwich Observatory equivalent on the Red Planet. Greenwich Observatory marks Earth’s Prime Meridian, a north-south line that defines East West where it comes from, and is used as a zero-reference line for astronomical observations.” The image was taken by the High-Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE), aboard the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. The large crater within this crater, called the Airy Crater, defined Mars’ zero longitude.
Since being uploaded, the image has managed to garner over 450K likes. One user commented that it “looks like alien footprints” on Mars. Another person wrote, “Something spectacular that leaves you speechless!!!” One Instagram user commented, “Beautiful picture of Mars I am 57 years old and I always wondered what I would be able to see in my life and these new pictures are interesting.”
This comes just after NASA’s Hubble Telescope confirmed that a comet with a nucleus 50 times larger than normal is flying toward Earth. The estimated speed is 22,000 mph, which is approximately 35,404 km/h. David Zwitt, a professor of planetary science and astronomy at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), said in a press release by NASA, “This comet is literally the tip of the iceberg for thousands of comets that are very faint. Much of the Solar System.” Look in the distant regions. We have always suspected that this comet must be large because it is so bright at such a great distance. Now we confirm that it is.” Called C/2014 UN271, it was discovered by astronomers Pedro Bernardinelli and Gary Bernstein. It was first observed in November 2010, when it was at a distance of 3 billion miles from the Sun. Since then, it has been studied extensively.
Several pictures of the celestial body were shared on NASA’s official Twitter page. “Big news! Not really. NASA Hubble confirms largest comet ever found. Its nucleus is bigger than Rhode Island’s. But don’t worry: Comet won’t come any closer to Earth than Saturn,” read the caption.
