Throughout the session, the two sides clashed, stalling the process of electing the chief minister for several hours.
Earlier, lawmakers of the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in the Punjab Assembly clashed with Deputy Speaker Mazari when he arrived to preside over the crucial session called for the election of the new chief minister of the province.

TV footage showed Mazari being slapped, punched and dragged by PTI members before being rescued by security guards.
“Those who attacked me want martial law in Pakistan but they will not succeed,” Mazari told reporters.
PTI MLAs brought “lota” to the House and chanted “lota, lota” (turncoat) as they took on disgruntled PTI members who had split from the party and decided to support the opposition.
Before the session could resume, another scuffle broke out between Elahi and Hamza supporters in the House, in which Elahi was injured. He is said to have broken his hand.
“I have been tortured at the behest of Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif,” Elahi alleged.
“They have given me a good reward in return for my goodness,” he said.
In an attempt to “finish me” he tried to harass me today by crossing all limits, Geo News quoted Elahi as saying.
Talking about the fighting in the assembly, Speaker Elahi claimed that Hamza was ordering members to “kill”.
“I took care of him while his family was in exile,” he said.
When Mazari was attacked after the first fight, the situation got out of control, police stationed outside the assembly entered the House.
Elahi and other members opposed this and called it a violation of the sanctity of the House.
“In the history of Pakistan, the police has never entered the Punjab Assembly. We will summon the Inspector General of Police of Punjab and give him a month’s imprisonment as per the law,” he said.
The Lahore High Court had on Friday directed the deputy speaker to conduct elections in a free and fair manner on Saturday.
In the Punjab Assembly, PTI has 183 MLAs, its ally PML-Q has 10. The PML-N has 165, the PPP seven, while five are independents and one belongs to the Raah-e-Haq.
