‘She doesn’t want husband to bring 3 other wives home’: CM Himanta tells UCC the need for Muslim women

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday set fire to the debate for the need for a Uniform Civil Code, calling it “an issue for every Muslim woman” who did not want her husband to bring home three other wives.

“Everyone wants UCC. No Muslim woman wants her husband to bring home 3 other wives. Ask any Muslim woman. UCC is not my issue, it is the issue of all Muslim women. If they want to give justice, then UCC will have to be brought after abolishing triple talaq.”

According to reports, the CM further said that the indigenous Muslims in Assam do not want to mix with the migrant Muslims.

He further said that the Muslim population in Assam is one religion, but two different classes in terms of culture and origin. One is a native of Assam, where there has been no migration in the last 200 years. According to Biswa, this group wants to separate from the migrant Muslims and give them their identity.

A Republic report said the chief minister said the state government would decide on the identity of indigenous and migrant Muslims in Assam.

“Sub-committee was constituted and report submitted. But all this is the report of the committee, the government has not taken the decision yet. It will decide in future who is an indigenous Muslim and who is an expatriate Muslim. There is no opposition to this in Assam. They know the difference, it has to be made official,” he said.

Many BJP leaders are bringing back the demand for UCC in their respective states.

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur had earlier told News18 that a Uniform Civil Code is being examined in the state after the Uttarakhand government announced a panel for the same.

“We have asked the officials to probe it and whether it is suitable for the state. It has come under active consideration after Uttarakhand announced a panel for the same. We believe the decision to implement the UCC is a good one but we are examining it. The message that has gone in favor of UCC from other states is correct. We are not ruling out the possibility of announcing it before the elections. We won’t be in a hurry. We will investigate and see what we can do.”

Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami had said that a high-level committee would be formed soon to draft the UCC and communal peace in the state would not be allowed to be disturbed at any cost.

In November 2021 the Allahabad High Court held that UCC is mandatory. This was stated by a single-judge bench of Justice Sunit Kumar, which was hearing a batch of 17 petitions related to protection sought by inter-religious couples.

In one of these arguments, one of the parties stated that he converted to the religion of his partner and thus felt a threat to his life, liberty and welfare.

Allowing the petitions, Justice Kumar observed that the UCC cannot be made “purely voluntary” because of the fear expressed by the members of the minority community.
