‘No Muslim woman wants husband to bring home three wives’: Assam CM on Uniform Civil Code

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday said that Uniform Civil Code (UCC) should be implemented in India in the interest of Muslim women. He said that no Muslim woman wants her husband to bring home three wives. If the UCC is not implemented, polygamy will continue and men will be able to marry multiple times, which will undermine the fundamental rights of women, he said.

His remarks come amid controversy after a statement by the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) termed efforts by various state governments and the Center to implement Uniform Civil Code in India as “an unconstitutional and anti-minority move”. .

Uniform Civil Code essentially refers to a common set of laws governing personal matters such as marriage, divorce, adoption, inheritance and succession.
