Internet giant Google is celebrating it 23rd birthday Today. What began as a university research project for two students from Standford University – Larry Page and Sergey Brin – changed the way the world used the Internet. When Google began its official journey on September 27, 1998, few would have believed that an Internet company could change the world, but it did.
Today it is impossible to imagine our life without the innovations introduced by Google. Google knows (almost) everything and you can even know it by a simple keyword search. However, there are some fascinating facts about this internet giant that not many know. So, we thought why not bring you some of these fun facts.
misspelled name
The name “Google” is actually a wordplay on the mathematical term ‘googol’ which is represented by the number 1 followed by a hundred zeros. The name was chosen because the founders “wanted to organize the unlimited amount of information on the web.”
started with a rented garage
Like all extraordinary stories in the world, Google’s journey too began with a humble background. While the Internet giant may now have offices in all the major countries of the world, it once operated from a garage in Menlo Park, California. The founder rented the garage of his friend Susan Wojcicki, who is now the CEO of YouTube.
Originally named Backrub
Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin originally planned to name their company ‘BackRub’ after a university research project they both started in 1996. Both chose BackRub as the engine’s name because the program analyzed the web’s backlinks to understand how important it was. The website was there or what other sites did it belong to. However, the name was later dropped for Google.
Google owns domain names with misspelled versions of their names
Google owns several domain names with misspelled versions of their names such as gooogle.com, goolr.com, gogle.com.
Google Image’s Jennifer Lopez Connection
While Google was founded in 1998, Google Images was not introduced to the world until July 2001. And the inspiration behind this new venture was a red-carpet photo of pop star Jennifer Lopez at the 2000 Grammy Awards. Lopez wore a green dress that caught the world’s attention and the Google search engine was flooded with questions about the photo. It was the most popular query at the time, but Google didn’t have a precise way to get users what they really wanted. This inspired Google to launch the venture of image searches on its platform.
banned in china
Although Google accounts for about 88.6 percent of the world’s total search engine market, it is among the many websites that have been banned by the Chinese government.
Google’s first tweet

It’s very common to see goats grazing on the lawn of Google’s headquarters. The company apparently hires goats to graze the lawn instead of using a mower to do the job.
