NCP-BJP workers clash in Pune: Action will be taken against culprits, irrespective of party, says Maha Home Minister

A day after a face-off between NCP and BJP workers at an event of Union Minister Smriti Irani in Pune, Maharashtra Home Minister Dilip Walse Patil on Tuesday said that the police will register a crime against whoever is guilty, Be it any party. To. However, Maharashtra BJP chief spokesperson Keshav Upadhyay, referring to several past incidents, claimed that “state government-sponsored terrorism in Maharashtra was with the tacit approval of (NCP chief) Sharad Pawar.” Pawar’s party shares power with Shiv Sena and Congress in Maharashtra.

The NCP Pune city unit on Monday alleged that a woman member of the party was assaulted by BJP workers inside an auditorium during a face-off between the two sides when Irani was participating in a book release event. An NCP leader had claimed that the incident took place when the women members of the NCP along with other party workers had gone to submit a memorandum to Irani on the hike in LPG prices.

It is objectionable to beat up a woman officer or any woman. Therefore, appropriate action will be taken, Walse Patil told reporters. NCP Maharashtra chief spokesperson Mahesh Taapsee expressed displeasure over Irani and senior state BJP leaders Devendra Fadnavis and Chandrakant Patil for not even condemning the alleged attack on the woman functionary.

This shows the mindset of Maharashtra BJP. Taapsee tweeted that the women of the state will definitely remember this incident. NCP spokesman Clyde Crasto said it was not surprising that Irani, who once spoke outspoken on price hikes (before 2014 when the BJP was in opposition), is now silent on the issue. But #SmritiIrani ji, Minister of Women and Child Development is silent and not condemning #BJP man’s attack on #NCP woman in #Pune is reprehensible & dereliction of duty, Crasto tweeted.

However, BJP leader Upadhyay hit out at NCP chief Sharad Pawar over the issue. Upadhyay also referred to past incidents of alleged thrashing of an engineer in the presence of policemen at the residence of state minister Jitendra Awhad and the recent separate “attacks” by NCP workers on BJP leader Vinayak Ambekar and Marathi actress Ketki Chitale. A BJP statement quoted Upadhyay as saying that there is state-sponsored terrorism in Maharashtra with Sharad Pawar’s tacit approval, the people’s right to live peacefully is threatened due to the hooliganism of NCP workers.

He claimed that the state home department, which is currently with the NCP, has directed the police to protect those who are allegedly indulging in spreading terror. The BJP leader further claimed that the ruling coalition plans to “destroy political opponents through terrorism”.
