UEFA Nations League: Hansi Flick remembers Marco Reus in strong Germany squad

Germany coach Hansi Flick on Thursday did not name any uncapped player in his squad and recalled Marco Reus for next month’s Nations League games against Italy, England and Hungary.

Germany will tour European champions Italy on 4 June before hosting them in Moenchengladbach on 14 June, face England in Munich on 7 June and will take on Hungary in Budapest on 11 June.

Chelsea stars Kai Havertz, Timo Werner and Antonio Ruediger, as well as Manchester City midfielder Ilke Gundogan, are all involved.

“Everyone has a chance to play their own way (before the World Cup). The door is open,” Flick said.

“I understand anyone who is disappointed.

“We made it clear to the players what we expect – that they have match practice and the rhythm from which they develop.”

Borussia Dortmund star Reus was expected to be recalled for last summer’s European Championships for the first time since 2019, but he abandoned the tournament due to fatigue.

He later returned in 2021 but is yet to play international football this year.

Flick also said he would not rule out giving 34-year-old uncapped striker Simon Terrode a call-up ahead of the World Cup, as he scored 30 goals in as many games to propel Schalke into promotion to the Bundesliga.

Goalkeeper Kevin Trapp, who helped Eintracht Frankfurt win Wednesday’s Europa League final against Rangers, made the cut.

Eight Bayern Munich players, who won their 10th consecutive Bundesliga title this season, are core members of the team, which is captained by Bayern keeper Manuel Neuer.

Germany are placed in Group E along with Spain, Japan and Costa Rica or New Zealand for the World Cup, which begins on 21 November.
