‘When a Big Tree Falls…’ Adhir Chowdhury’s Rajiv Gandhi Pays Tribute to Another Self-Targeting for Congress

Congress leader in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury on Saturday came under fire after a tweet attributed to him on the death anniversary of Rajiv Gandhi brought back painful memories of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

The viral screenshot of Chowdhury’s purported tweet featured a quote along with pictures of Rajiv Gandhi, attributed to the former prime minister after the assassination of his mother and then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi at the hands of his Sikh bodyguards on October 31, 1984 Was.

After the anti-Sikh riots in which prominent Congress leaders are accused, Rajiv Gandhi said in a public meeting: “Whenever a big tree falls, the earth shakes a little. (Whenever a big tree falls, the earth shakes).” Over the years, the statement has been cited as the Congress’s justification for the riots that killed over 2,000 people in the national capital.

As the BJP and other parties took a dig at him and the Congress, Choudhary claimed that the tweet “has nothing to do with my own observation” despite being posted earlier and then deleted the tweet from his official handle. .

“A malicious campaign is being propagated by the forces opposing me,” Chowdhury said.

Taking a jibe at the Congress, BJP leader Amit Malviya said that Choudhary has decided to call “a spade a spade”.

National Conference leader and former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah said: “The Congress doesn’t need others to drag it down when it does such a good job of achieving self-targeting goals.”

While the Congress was yet to respond to criticism of Chowdhary’s tweet, it portends the old party’s troubles months after it lost power to the Aam Aadmi Party in Punjab.

The party had faced criticism last week for exempting the Gandhi family from its ‘one family, one ticket’ rule, inviting dynastic politics from the BJP and other parties.
