Prophet’s remark controversy: Home Ministry advises police chiefs of states, union territories to be ‘alert’

In the midst of controversy over the controversial remarks of Prophet Muhammad, the Union Home Ministry on June 10 said police chiefs of states and union territories may be targeted, citing being prepared and alert.

Following several incidents of violence from different parts of the country over controversial remarks by suspended BJP leader Nupur Sharma and expelled leader Naveen Jindal against Prophet Muhammad, the MHA issued a statement to all state and union territory police.

He said, “We have asked the deployed policemen to be in proper riot gear to maintain the law and order situation. A deliberate attempt will be made to disturb the peace in the country. Police and, if necessary, paramilitary force will be deployed.” Will also need to be on alert mode to counter any untoward situation,” the official said.

Apart from this, the officer also said that instructions have been issued to keep a watch on the marginalized elements giving provocative speeches.

“We have asked the state police to identify those who posted live videos of violence and provocative speeches. Take necessary action against such people,” he said.

The order has been issued by the MHA after violence erupted in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj and protests in Moradabad, Saharanpur and Firozabad.

At the same time, many other states including Delhi, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Jharkhand, Punjab, Hyderabad and Gujarat also faced massive protests.

In Jharkhand’s capital Ranchi, the SSP, SP City, DSP City, Daily Market SHO, and some other police personnel who were controlling the situation during the protests were injured.
