Varanasi: Train operations, badly hit by widespread anti-Agneepath protests, especially when protesters targeted trains by pelting stones and setting some on fire, are slowly returning to normalcy.
East Central Railway (ECR) and North Eastern Railway (NER) are restoring train timings, which were disrupted due to the cancellation of several trains due to violent protests. when ECR 58 long distance trains resumed operations on Tuesday ner The canceled trains will start from Thursday.
“Work is being done round the clock to restore the suspended trains due to violent protests. 58 long distance express trains, which were canceled due to protests, were started on Tuesday,” said ECR CPRO Virendra Kumar,
He said that the remaining long distance express trains would be started immediately as soon as rakes are available. Express/intercity trains and major passenger trains started operating on Wednesday, while other passenger trains would operate in a phased manner as per the availability of rakes.
NER’s Varanasi division spokesperson Ashok Kumar said that the canceled trains would be resumed from Thursday. Several trains were cancelled, short terminated and rescheduled due to violent protests by the NER.
NER CPRO Pankaj Kumar Singh said the protests affected the operation of 52 trains on June 17, 90 trains on June 18 and 94 trains on June 20.
A train was set on fire at Ballia railway station, which was vandalized by protesters on June 17, while Kuchman station in Chandauli was vandalized on June 18.

Massive protests had erupted against the newly introduced Agneepath short-term recruitment scheme in the armed forces.
